4.4.3
All poles to be used where vehicular impact might occur shall be designed so that failure under impact loads is ductile.
Note: Ductility in a concrete pole con be considered to be achieved when there is substant’al stretching of the reinforcement before failure of the concrete in compression. This Is automatically achieved in lightly reinforced products.
4.5 Transverse bending design methods
4.5.1 Transverse bending design by published formulas
Poles designed using the method of bending design by published formulas shall have their bending strength assessed in accordance with Section 6 of AASHTO LTS-4-M, The accuracy of the predicted strength shall be verified by testing in accordance with Clause 7.5.
4.5.2 Bending design by empirical or iterative methods
4.5.2.1
Bending strengths of poles may be assessed in accordance with an empirical or iterative method that uses linear or other mathematically generated curves that approximate the experimentally generated values of stress and strain for the component materials used in the pole. The accuracy of the predicted strength shall be verified by testing in accordance with Clause 7.5.
4.5.2.2
Once a design method has been verified by testing that incorporates a range of pole strengths, pole geometries, and material strengths, interpolation within any and all of these ranges may occur without further testing.
4.5.2.3
Once a design method has been verified by testing that incorporates a range of pole strengths, pole geometries, and material strengths, extrapolation beyond the range of any parameter may occur, provided that the parameter value is not more than 150% of the maximum used in any test and not less than 65% of the minimum used in any test.
4.6 Mounting
Poles shall be designed to meet the specified strength requirements when mounted in accordance with the purchaser’s poles instructions. If no mounting instructions are provided by the purchaser, poles shall be designed so that they meet the specified strength requirements when clamped at the butt over a length equal to 10% of the length of the pole plus 600 mm (2 ft) but not less than 1200 mm (4 ft).
