12 Power-Frequency Withstand Voltage Tests
12.1 Devices intended to replace standard protective devices shall comply with the power frequency (dielectric) withstand test as required by the standard that covers the device.
12.2 Low-voltage interrupting devices that are not intended to replace standard protective devices shall comply with the power-frequency withstand voltage tests of For Switchgear — Metal-Enclosed Low-Voltage AC Power Circuit Breaker Switchgear Assemblies — Conformance Test Procedures, ANSI/IEEE C37.51.
12.3 Medium-voltage interrupting devices that are not intended to replace standard protective devices shall comply with the power-frequency withstand voltage tests of For Switchgear — Metal-Enclosed Interrupter Switchgear Assemblies — Conformance Testing, ANSI/IEEE C37.57.
13 Internal Arcing Fault Test
13.1 To demonstrate the interrupting device does not create an arc fault hazard during the interruption of an arcing fault at the minimum and maximum arcing fault current rating, the interrupting device shall be installed in equipment representative of the end use in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions, and the equipment shall be subjected to testing in accordance with the IEEE Guide for Testing Metal-Enclosed Switchgear Rated Up to 52 kV for Internal Arcing Faults, ANSI/IEEE C37.20.7 The prospective test circuit for each test shall be based on the minimum and maximum arcing fault current ratings, with a test voltage equal to the maximum voltage rating of the interrupting device. This test may be combined with the Arcing Fault Interruption Test in Section 14.
13.2 Indicators shall be provided around the vertical section of the equipment containing the interrupting device. Indicator placement shall be in accordance with the requirements of IEEE Guide for Testing Metal-Enclosed Switchgear Rated Up to 52 kV for Internal Arcing Faults, ANSI/IEEE C37.20.7 for the accessibility type of the equipment containing the interrupting device.
13.3 The arc initiation wire shall be in accordance with the requirements of the appropriate Annex of IEEE Guide for Testing Metal-Enclosed Switchgear Rated Up to 52 kV for Internal Arcing Faults. ANSI/IEEE C37.20.7 based upon the type of equipment the quenching device is installed in. The arc shall be initiated within the circuit that is protected by the interrupting device. The arc initiation is not required to be within the compartment or vertical section containing the interrupting device.
13.4 Devices that are not resettable shall be subjected to one arcing fault interruption operation. Devices that are resettable shall be subjected to three arcing fault interruption operations. After each operation, a resettable device shall be permitted to be serviced and restored to operable conditions in accordance with the manufacturer’s instruction manual.
13.5 At the conclusion of the testing, the interrupting device shall be in the open state, and shall comply with the power-frequency withstand test requirements of Section 12 except the test voltage shall be 75 percent of the value specified in Section 12. Welding of any contact is not acceptable.UL 2748A-2017 pdf free download.
