3.3.2 Exemptions
Concessions shall apply for the omission of fire dampers for openings that are—
(a) located in an external clement where an unprotected opening is permitted by building regulations;
(b) located in a toadbearing element required to have an FRL with respect to structural adequacy only;
(C) protected with enclosing construction in accordance with Clause 3.4:
(d) protected by Construction equivalent to a prototype test specimen in accordance with Clause 3.5;
(e) contained in a shaft such that the required level of tire separation is maintained (see Figure 3.1), or
(I’) located at the entry to a shaft where the FRL of the shaft is maintained through all other fire compartments traversed by that shaft (see Figure 3.1).
For the purposes of Items (e) and (1), shafts shall not form part of multiple fire compartments simultaneously.
3.3.3 Exclusions
Openings in building elements that are required to have an FRL shall not include fire dampers, and shall be protected by other means where such openings are—
(a) associated with a system that is protected with subducts in accordance with Clauses 3.6 and 3.7.4;
(b) associated with a duct forming part of a kitchen exhaust system required to comply with AS 1668.2. which shall be installed in accordance with Section 6:
(c) associated with a duct forming part of a common residential kitchen exhaust system that is configured as a minor exhaust system and provided with subducts in accordance with Clauses 3.6 and 3.7.4;
(d) part of a lift %crn. which shall be configured in accordance with Clause 3,4;
(e) associated with a diesel tire pump room ventilation system, which shall be configured in accordance with Clause 3.4;
(0 associated with a dedicated tire-isolated cxit pressuriiation system, which shall be configured in accordance with Section 10: and
(g) associated with a fume cupboard exhaust system where—
(I) accelerated corrosion of the tire damper resulting in failure in less than 5 years;
(ii) exposure of maintenance personnel to toxic substances during inspection; or (iii) exposure of laboratory staff to toxic substances in the event of faulty tire
damper closure.
