Method 3.2: Lime or cement content of stabilized pavement materials (EDTA method).
(b) Grind the sample to pass a 425 jim sieve. Remove any iron with a magnet.
(c) Weigh out approximately 0.5 g of the ground stabilizing agent and record the mass (m).
8 PROCEDURE
8.1 Preparation of solutions of test Portions
8.1.1 (Icswral
lest solutions for lime content determinations shall be prepared in accordance with Clauses 8.1.2 and 8.1.4. and for cement content in accordance with Clauses 8.1.3 and 8.1.4.
NOTE: Good practice in chemical testing requires that duplicate determinations should bc made for each of the test portions.
8.1.2 Link’ conteni deiernii,iat ion
Determine lime content in the following manner:
(a) Place the test portion iii a beaker and add 80 mL of the 1:1 hydrochloric acid and digest in water bath at just below boiling point for IS mm. Allow the solution to cool to ambient temperature.
(b) Add a tw grams of the paper pulp-Filtering agent and stir. Add about 10 mg of ammonium nitrate or ammoniurn chloride and stir.
(c) Filter and wash the contents into a beaker. Disregard any small amounts of sediment passing through the paper.
(d) Dilute the filtrate to approximately 200 mL with distilled water and mix.
8.1.3 C’e,,,enl conleni deierminaiion
Determine the cement content in the following manner:
(a) Place the test portion in a beaker, add 100 ml. of distilled water and disperse by swirling gently. Add 10 mL of the 1:2 hydrochloric acid cautiously and when cffrvescence has ceased, swirl the solution gently. Break any lumps %ith a glass rod.
(b) Evaporate the solution in the beaker to dryness in a water bath. flake in a beaker to between 400°C and 600°C (for example on a hotplate) with a clock-glass covering the beaker, for a period of I h to I h.
(c) Allow the beaker and its contents to cool then add 10 mL of the 1:1 hydrochloric acid. Cover the beaker with a clock-glass and boil the solution for about 30 s. Crush any lumps with a glass rod. lithe solution is green, add two drops of nitric acid.
(d) Cool the beaker and its contents: dilute, filter and wash the contents into a beaker.AS 5101.3.2-2008 pdf free download.
